Leaving Amsterdam, spring 1940

by DAVID V. APPLEYARD

No more doors are left to slam
Before she's leaving Amsterdam
On the 'six o'clock' for somewhere out beyond.
She counts the seconds till it nears
The time to end those happy years
In a place of which she's grown so very fond.

Heavy wheels now gain momentum
As that train slow' pulls away,
And staring out upon that platform,
She still hears a call to stay.
But decisions have been made for her,
There's little left to say;
She will never need reminding,
She will not regret this day.

Windmills, canals and tulip fields
Slip away into the night,
Quaint quintessential Dutchness
As darkness steals her sight.
When tomorrow comes she'll fear
Her restless soul will find
The Netherlands she held so dear
Is left for good behind.
